History

The St James Sports Club hockey team was first fielded in 1931 and was the forerunner of the Glebe District Hockey Club (GDHC) founded in 1933.

The GDHC has proudly fielded hockey teams in the Sydney Hockey Competition and its predecessor organisations every year since then. The Club fielded its first junior team in 1948. Women’s teams played in 1934/35, recommenced in 1977 and have played continuously since then. Since its inception over 10,000 people have been members of the GDHC.

The Club has a long history of participation and on-field success across all its grades in men's women's and junior teams throughout the Club's long history. Despite those honours, it is in the sense of community and loyalty built around the GDHC that has continued to be the cornerstone of the Club’s success, providing not just a game of hockey to its members and supporters but lifelong friendship, an experience of family, and a place of belonging and acceptance for everyone regardless of their point of difference.  Our Club history tells more than just the stories of the wins and losses of hockey games.

Since our beginnings back in 1931 we have welcomed people of all ages and abilities and, as we head confidently towards our 100th year in 2031, we continue to build from those good people who join us a Champion Club, a Club of Champions.

Thanks to City of Sydney Council for a grant to digitize the club records and publish them on the club website.  The GDHC would like to thank Harrison's Data Capture, who skilfully and carefully digitalized the Club's historical material which you can read below.
