Ross Tapsell

Date of Birth: 17 July 1981

Games Played : 252

Premierships Won: 2nds 2003, 3rds 2004, 4ths 2005, u17 & u15 sometime in the 1990s, when I showed Pat Casey how to play wing half...

Representative Honours/Previous club/s: I played for Sydney U21 once. The coach told me to get out there and "play for your mates". I looked at the team and saw 4 Moorebank guys, 4 Sutho guys and 2 Ryde dudes and didn't quite follow his point. That was the last time I played Rep hockey. Also played one season with a Jakarta-based team in 2010 while living there. I mentioned I'd previously played for Glebe in Australia. The Indonesian coach, Deny, eyes widened. He replied: "Glebey? Tough team. They beat us in Singapore 7's in the semi. Adam Campano. Oh he loves a drink".

Pre-Match Rituals & Superstitions: Lately my pre-match ritual is to shoot at goal and miss.

Favourite Memory/Moment With the GDHC:

Moment: Would have to be winning 2nd grade in 2003 from 4th position, beating undefeated Moorebank in the final 4-2.

Memory: Harry Wark telling me as an 9-year-old "Ross, if you trained for hockey as much as you talked you'd be in the Australian team." It was probably then I decided on a career as a lecturer. (p.s. I'm pretty sure H said the same thing to a 7- year-old Mark Paterson that day!)

Sporting Hero: To play alongside, Ken Wark Jnr was inspiring and so tough, even in his later years was a great influence on some of us younger guys coming through.

My Last Meal Would Be: Googa's leftover BBQ sausages at GDHC at 4am. That may have already been the last meal for a few people, whether they wanted it to be or not.

If I Wasn't Playing Hockey This Saturday I Would Be: On the beach or coaching a rugby league team somewhere

Why I Play Hockey For Glebe: Since my return to playing club hockey and entering the competition in Sydney 4 years ago, playing against Glebe was always challenging and the way in which Glebe played against the opposition impressed me with their physical and mental toughness.  I also appreciated how much of a "club" from outside it seemed to be with all and everyone supporting each other, which for the club I was with seemed to be non-existent as teams where silos and the elite where separated from everyone, where at Glebe I have felt welcome since walking into training and it is a very good atmosphere on the weekends at the games.
