At Glebe, we focus on the support and nurturing of players at club level.
Many of our Glebe Juniors have gone on to state and national honours including representing Australia. For others, hockey has created exciting opportunities such as playing hockey for overseas Universities and Clubs and attending carnivals across the country.
GDHC is about developing our Juniors including their hockey and team skills, their strategic thinking, their teamwork and providing opportunities for leadership and contribution. Our Juniors tell us they love playing for Glebe because of the strong friendships they form, the opportunities the Club provides and because it’s fun.
We welcome all players of all abilities or experience from ages 4 to 18.
Younger players (aged 4-8) often begin with our popular “hookin2hockey” Minkey program, which focuses on building basic hockey skills. Find out more here. This includes an under 8 round robin later in the season.
From about age 7, more experienced players choose to join our under 10 competition season. Our Junior teams range from under 10s (U10) through to under 18s (U18) and are mixed teams of girls and boys.
What competitions do Glebe Juniors play in?
We have Juniors at each age level playing in the SEHA (Sydney East Hockey Association) Competition. At least one of our teams at each of the U14 and U16 age levels plays in the Sydney Metro competition, which is a Sydney-wide competition and the premier Junior competition in Sydney.
When do Glebe Juniors play?
Our Junior teams usually play at the following times:
- The U8 competition will be held at Jubilee Oval on Saturday mornings from Term 2 - further details TBC.
- U10s – U12s play on Saturdays between 8:00am and 1:00pm.
- U14 & U16 teams play on either Friday evenings from 6.30pm, or a combination of Friday evenings from 6.30pm and Saturday mornings, depending on their team allocation.
- U18s usually play on Friday evenings from about 6:30pm.
Where do Glebe Juniors play?
U8s are at Jubiliee Oval. Our U10s and U12s play at Jubilee Oval, Kyeemagh, Daceyville and Sutherland. Our U10s and U12Bs play every second week at Jubilee Oval and at other venues on alternative weeks.
Other age groups play at the following venues: Bankstown, Kyeemagh, Moorebank, Sutherland, Daceyville and Marang (Kurnell).
Each year at least one of our teams at both U14 and U16 age levels plays in the Sydney Metro competition at venues including Cintra, Olympic Park and at other venues used by the Metro competition.
When is the season played?
The competition season commences at the end of March (all age groups except U8s and Minkeys) and end of April for U8s and Minkeys. The season runs until mid-September.
No junior hockey games are scheduled for the Easter and June long weekends. Games are generally not played during the school holidays however occasionally the first or last weekend of the holidays may be a game day.
Training
Junior teams train at Cintra Hockey Complex on Mondays or Tuesdays at 5:30pm – 6:30pm or at Jubilee Oval or Camperdown Tennis Centre on Wednesday evenings from 5.30-6.30pm. The training time depends on the team and age level.
Junior Development Academy sessions (which are optional skill development sessions) are held throughout the year at either Jubilee Oval, Camperdown Tennis or Cintra Hockey Complex and for more experienced players at Bankstown.
Development Academy
Development Academy is a series of specific skills and fitness development sessions run by a very experienced team of Glebe Club coaches and led by our Development Director, Katrina Cochrane. This is for U10s to U18s.
The Academy is for players of all abilities and the purpose is to build and enhance specialist skills and improve fitness. Development Academy is in addition to training and is not mandatory. However, players of all abilities from U10 above are encouraged to attend as often as they can.
We commence Development Academy sessions in late January or early February in preparation for the season ahead. Development Academy also runs every few weeks throughout the season.
Glebe also runs a Junior Accelerator program for experienced players who are competing at representative level (or whom are capable of doing so). This is run by experienced Senior Coaches and enables our Seniors part of the Club to assist our Juniors to build play and technical skills over and above their team training.
How do I determine my child’s age level?
The age of players is taken as at 1 January each year and the player must be under the age level at that date.
For example, for a player to play in an U14 team, they must be 13 years of age or less (in other words under 14) on 1 January of the relevant year. The player can turn 14 after 1 January in a year and still play in the U14s for the year. This applies in the same way for all age levels.
Equipment requirements
Shin pads and mouth guards are mandatory for all Juniors. Once players commence playing with harder balls, defensive face masks are required for players when they are defending a penalty corner. This is a penalty situation where a shot on goal is provided to other team. Face masks are removed as soon as the penalty corner play is complete and are worn for only a short period of time.
Uniforms
Uniforms are what make our kids feel part of the team, and part of something bigger!
At Glebe, our one Club approach means that right from U8 to our Senior players, we have a consistent uniform. And we're very proud to have formed a partnership with New Balance to ensure our uniforms are of the highest quality, that we can offer at a reasonable price.
For Glebe Juniors we also run a second-hand program between February and April where we can supply used Glebe uniform pieces for a small donation to the Club. Please contact glebejuniorhockey@gmail.com to donate a used item in good condition or to request an item.
Ordering your uniform:
Uniforms for U8 to U18 can be purchased via our Uniform store.
You can read instructions here on the steps to take, and to get the discount code that applies when purchasing a full kit.
Once you have ordered your uniform, collection will be available from the Clubhouse the following Wednesday.
Coaches
All Glebe coaches are experienced hockey players themselves. Most also have coaching accreditation. There is an opportunity for players to be exposed to a variety of coaches at Glebe, in addition to their team coach, via our Development Academy.
Social events and carnivals
We also run Junior carnivals and social events throughout the year.
How do I register?
Registrations open in late January or early February for the season ahead and usually close in mid March for U10 to U18 and mid April for U8.
Minkey registrations can be made at any time after registrations open throughout the season. Minkey runs from March until the end of August or start of September.
Once the competition season commences in late March (and late April for U8) our ability to register players in U10 to U18 is limited to there being spaces on teams however please contact glebejuniorhockey@gmail.com.au as we often still have places.
At other times of the year, please contact us at glebejuniorhockey@gmail.com so we can notify you once registrations open.
